Jamaica - by Grant Fraser
Breezes at Sunset

Whether you are in search of some well-deserved rest and relaxation or have your sights set on non-stop fun and excitement, the Breezes Runaway Bay Golf and Beach Resort is the place for you. Located approximately one hour east of Montego Bay, the resort offers every physical and leisure activity imaginable for singles and couples alike. For the golf enthusiast, imagine a 6,814-yard, par 72, championship golf course overlooking the spectacular Caribbean Sea. With a course rating of 73.5 from the back tees, the course is undoubtedly one of the finest layouts in Jamaica. Designed in 1960 by Major John Harris of Great Britain, the Breezes Super Clubs Golf Club is home to the World Cup of Golf Super Qualifier.

The course has hosted other notable championship events including the Ryder Cup match between the U.K. and the West Indies, the Jamaica Open, and the Heineken World Cup Qualifier.

In addition to the lush and tropical surroundings, the golf course has an abundance of redeeming qualities. Most notably are the rolling fairways and the deceptively fast greens. The breaks tend to be subtle but reconfirm an old adage that putts really do break toward the sea. If you are a guest of the resort, green fees are included, however, there is a charge for golf carts and caddies are mandatory. For those who prefer to walk, you will have the pleasure of having a caddy accompany you throughout your round. In many cases, these are locals who have caddied at the course for well over 20 years. Besides being some of the friendliest people on the island, they are very knowledgeable about both the game and the golf course. This is extremely helpful as you line up those difficult 30-foot putts or are unsure of which club to play on your approach. This unsurpassed expertise is yours for a very reasonable $14.00 U.S. (gratuity not included!).

For both the novice and seasoned golfer intent on improving their game, the golf course is home to the only golf academy in Jamaica. Under the guidance of long time PGA professional Seymour Rose, a well qualified team of instructors provide both theoretical and practical coaching on modest practice facilities that include a driving range, putting green, and practice bunker.

The signature hole on the golf course is the 170-yard, par 3, 6th hole. From the highest and most scenic vantage point on the golf course, the tee deck provides panoramic vistas for as far as the eye can see. Again, the winds are a factor and demand that you start your approach out toward the right side of the green.

The most ominous hole on the golf course is the 421-yard, par4, 17th hole. From an elevated tee deck, this dog-leg left is well deserving of its number one stroke rating. Strong westerly winds are a mainstay of the golf course and make their presence felt immediately off the tee. A series of bunkers line the left side of the fairway and anxiously await tee shots that fail to take the crosswindsinto account. Your approach is to a well-protected green guarded by bunkers to the right. As with all of the greens on the golf course, the 17th green is fast and deceptive. It is on this hole in particular that you should adhere to the advice of your caddy.

The remainder of the golf course is equally challenging. The par 4’s in particular are very difficult as most are exceptionally long and are frequently played into the wind. All but two measure over 400 yards and the shortest, although only 328 yards, is perhaps the tightest hole on the course. Regardless of how you play, this golfing experience is one you will not soon forget.

After your round, plenty more awaits you back at the resort. At Superclubs, all efforts have been directed at redefining the term “ all-inclusive” as no amenity or activity has been forgotten. Whether it is the non-stop fun and excitement, the live entertainment, or the decadent buffets, this five-star vacation venue will undoubtedly lure you back time and time again.
